Gina Sobel grew up in a jazz household, and that improvisational spirit is found throughout her music. She is a remarkably versatile musician; her first love was the flute and she cut her teeth playing with her father’s jazz band by the time she was 12. She soon picked up the saxophone and also began to refine her voice, which can be characterized by its smoky lows and powerful highs, a testament to the impact of her love for the likes of Nina Simone and Joni Mitchell. Gina currently makes her home in Charlottesville, Virginia, where she is known for her bombastic flute playing, powerful voice and her insightful and richly textured writing.
The Sobel 4tet, Gina’s 4-piece jazz ensemble, equals fresh jazz. The young quartet plays original music informed and inspired by the greats as well as contemporary, vernacular influences - a little swing, a little funk and a little something else. The group just recorded their first record of original music, and features Gina Sobel on flute, bass flute and vocals, Jonah Kane-West on organ, Kris Monson on bass and Daniel Richardson on drums.
